Local Lovin' | CanCan's Handmade Skincare

Local Lovin' is a series of blog posts and Youtube videos that I have been wanting to start doing for the longest time. It's a series focused on discovering and trying out products that are made locally, both in Australia and Malaysia. Over the holidays, I began discovering a few local brands whilst I was in Malaysia and I came across Can Can's Handmade skincare range. I first discovered them through their Instagram account and proceeded to have a look at their website, what really drew my attention to them was the fact that their products are free from harsh chemicals, handcrafted and cruelty free! As mentioned in my 2016 Beauty Goals post, I am trying to slowly transition into a cruelty free lifestyle starting with the products I use in my skincare routine. Therefore the fact that their products are free from harsh chemicals and the cruelty free aspect of this brand was very enticing to me.

The products I purchased

Can Can's Handmade was founded in 2015 by Kiru and her partner (Can Can is actually his nickname. I wonder how they came up with that!). Their handcrafted products range from face masks, tinted lip balms and body scrubs to necklaces, bracelets and makeup accessories . Their bestselling products are their KRU Coffee Scrub which has similar ingredients to the Frank Body Scrub, their Charcoal Scrub Soap Bar, Lipgasm Lip Tint and the Char-Glow Face Mask.

The first thing I tried was the Char-Glow Face Mask. I was so excited to try this as face masks using activated charcoal are always being raved about in the beauty industry such as the GlamGlow Youthmud Mask and the Biore Charcoal Range. The first thing I noticed was that it didn't come with instructions and the product looked like charcoal grey fine sand which was something I had never come across in any of the skincare products I've used. I sent Kiru a text saying something along the lines of "I don't know what to do!", she promptly replied with the following instructions:
  1.  Use a tablespoon of the product and mix in a few drops of water with your finger until a paste is formed
  2. Apply to face using circular motions and leave for 10-15 minutes (You might feel a bearable itch sensation)
  3. Wash off with warm water and pat your face dry
Now one table spoon goes a long way, I think I could’ve gotten away with using just half a table spoon for my entire face! The paste formed was very clumpy so I wasn’t sure if I was doing it right but in the end the clumps in the paste exfoliated my skin the most. Exfoliation is important as it removes the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin along with all the gunk that may have been stuck in the pores of the skin and the use of activated charcoal helps purify and deeply cleanse the pores. The paste glided on extremely smoothly which was something I did not expect, and took about 10 minutes to dry completely. It started off as a dark grey colour when it was first applied however changes into a blue grey colour once it was dry which made it easy to tell which parts of the mask had dried completely - something I found quite handy. I found that it only itched the slightest bit when I tried it on for the first time however it wasn’t an unbearable itch, the mask also tightens around the face to improve the elasticity of the skin. Basically, you can’t really talk when you have the mask on which is sometimes a struggle for me because I love talking! Once I washed the mask off with warm water, I noticed that my pores, acne and acne scarring weren’t as visible as they were when I put it on and my skin tone was noticeably more even. It also made my skin feel extremely clean like I had washed all the dirt accumulated on my face off even in the nooks and crannies like the sides of your nose. I personally wouldn’t recommend this product to those with dry or sensitive skin as it is quite drying, I felt the need to apply an extremely hydrating moisturiser after which helped soothe my face. After using the mask once a week for a few weeks, I noticed that the texture on my skin wasn’t as visible as it was before, and that my acne was healing a lot faster and I believe it was due to using both this mask and the soap bar.

Can Can’s Handmade Charcoal Soap Bar literally looks like a charcoal soap bar, you’d look at it and think “oh that’s interesting, but do I really need it?” well I’m here to tell you that you do. I was fairly skeptical about the product when I first purchased it as I didn’t really think about how I don’t really use soap bars because I find that there is a bigger scent range in liquid soaps and that the scent lasts a lot longer. The bar has a rough texture to exfoliate your body during every use without irritating the skin nor over-exfoliating. The bar contains activated charcoal, poppy seeds and various oils such as coconut, palm, eucalyptus and grapefruit essential oil. The oils rehydrate the skin after the exfoliation which makes your skin feel smooth and supple. In my opinion, the soap bar has been a lot more moisturising than the Dove In Shower Moisturiser.
